Located in the western part of China, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (Xingjiang for short) is the largest province in China, accounting for the one-sixth land of China. It borders eight countries including Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, India, and Afghanistan. There are 47 minorities living here. Its history can date back to B.C. 60. This series of article is going to list 6 places you must visit when you come to Xingjiang. I am going to present you with Turpan this time.
Turpan is situated in the mid-east region of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. There are many scenic destinations here.
1. The Mountain of Flames
The Mountain of Flames is the hottest place in China. The highest land surface temperature could be more than 70 degrees Celsius, which would be more than enough to boil the egg. The Mountain of Flames is also famous for its connection with the CUG (also known as the Journey to the West), which is one of the four ancient classic books in China. It is said that during the journey to the West, the master and his three appetences had passed by this mountain. The Monkey King had to borrow the magic fan to put out the fire so that the team can continue the journey. It is recommended to visit the Mountain of Flames between July and August. It would get a bit cold after September. The ticket sells at 60 RMB per person. The opening hour is from 8: 00 a.m. to 9: 00 p.m. (from 21 April to 20 October), and 10: 00 a.m. to 6: 30 p.m. (from 21 October to 20 April).
2. Grape Valley
In contrast with the dessert-style Mountain of Flames, Grape Valley is an oasis. It is only 15 miles away from the Mountain of Flames. Due to the crustal movement and form of rivers, there are many valleys covered with trees and grassland. Also, as the result of the large temperature difference between day and night, plus with long hours of sunshine, fruits grown here are quite juicy and sweet. There are various fruits growing here including peach, apple, peer, pomegranate, watermelon, grape to name but a few. Also, it is also the home to many kinds of trees such as, elm, poplar, willow, sophora to name but a few. Hence, the Grape Valley is also known as “the garden of a hundred of fruits” and “the garden of a hundred of trees”. there are around 6000 people living here including the Han, the Hui and the Uygur. It is recommended to visit the Grape Valley between July and September. The ticket sells at 60 RMB per person.
