Shangri-La means the best place in Tibetan. It is located at the intersection of Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet. It is one of the most important nature conservation areas in China. 2. Old Town of Lijiang
With the coordinate being E 110.14, N 26.52 and the altitude being 2400 meters, Old Town of Lijiang is located in the northwestern part of Yunnan. It is a city with stunning view, long history and diverse culture. It has been listed in the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 1997. The town was built in the Song and the Yuan dynasty, and became prosperous in the Ming and the Qing dynasty.
3. Yulong Snow Mountain
With 5600 meters, it is the southernmost mountain in the northern hemisphere and China. It is just 15 kilometres away from Old Town of Lijiang. Yu means the jade, and long means the dragon. The snow-covered and fog-enlaced mountain resembles a jade dragon lying in clouds, hence the name. It is a home to many rare animals and plants, including 400 kinds of trees and 30 types of animals protected by the country. It is a great place for sightseeing, mountain climbing and skiing.
4. Lugu Lake
Located at the intersection of Sichuan and Yunnan, Lugu lake is known as “the pearl of the plateau” as it is 2690 meters above the sea level. With an area of 50 square kilometres, the water is as clear as a crystal, as smooth as a mirror and as blue as the sky. It is a paradise as if no human has ever set footsteps here before. The lake is surrounded by layers upon layers of mountains with trees. Unlike the modern society, the people of Mosuo has been living here for generations and still keep the matriarchal society system.
Located in the middle of Yunnan, Dali has a long history which could date back to the 4th century. It is 2090 meters above the sea level. It is famous for the old town and home-made handicrafts. There are not many variations of temperature throughout the year with only moderate summers and mild winters. The old town is well-known for its traditional architecture, minority cultures and nightlife. Although it is known as the heaven of a backpacker, foreign tourists are now substantially outnumbered by Chinese travelers. There is also much to see and do in the countryside nearby.
